With the help of a trio of virtuous U.S. marshals called the Trail Blazers (Ken Maynard, Hoot Gibson, Bob Steele), the honest ranchers tangle with the politicians' henchmen.

Inspired by the Battle of the Little Bighorn, this Western follows a selfish military leader, Gen. Frederick McCabe (Andrew Duggan), who unfeelingly throws his soldiers into dangerous battle situations, and the soldiers who must follow his orders. While waiting to be sent into combat, two of the men - Harrod (Tom Tryon) and Rogers (Harve Presnell) - find themselves in the midst of a love triangle as they both pursue the heart of the beautiful Lou Woddard (Senta Berger).

Jake Remy (Warren Oates) and his band of mercenaries shoot their way through a tiny border town, planning to escape with their plunder across the river into Mexico. They dispatch a few men to neutralize the local ferryman, Travis (Lee Van Cleef), but he and flinty mountain man Phil (Forrest Tucker) foil the scheme. By the time Jake reaches the river, Travis has already taken everyone from the town to the Mexican side. He refuses passage to the mercenaries, and a lengthy standoff ensues.

After a bank robbery goes wrong, outlaw Billy Two Hats (Desi Arnaz Jr.) is captured by Sheriff Gifford (Jack Warden). Billy's partner, Arch Deans (Gregory Peck), rescues him, but during the escape Deans gets shot in the leg. The wound leaves Deans unable to ride a horse, but Billy refuses to leave him behind. Instead, he builds a horse-drawn cot for him, and they continue together. The apparatus slows them down, however, making them even more vulnerable to capture from the pursuing sheriff.

After the Civil War, veteran Ben Shelby (Ben Johnson) travels to Arizona to seek out fellow veteran Johnny Tallon (Dane Clark). After saving Johnny's blind brother, Ned (Peter Graves), from being trampled by a horse, Ben accompanies him to the family ranch. While Ben and Ned become friends, Ned's uncle grows suspicious about Ben's claim of friendship with Johnny. As they all wait for news of Johnny, they face an Indian attack and the arrival of vengeful former soldiers also seeking Johnny.

Banking mogul "Honest John" Travers (Cy Kendall) is using methods both illegal and immoral to monopolize the economy of Johnstown, a Western outpost.
