A con man who has tried to turn over a new leaf, Honest John Calhoun (Randolph Scott) is the owner and operator of a dance hall in the north of Canada. John has hoped to evade both the police and his past, but his history catches up with him when his ex-girlfriend, Belle De Valle (Gypsy Rose Lee), appears in his venue as a member of a dance troupe. As John and Belle reunite, fellow entertainer Lettie Candless (Dinah Shore) also becomes infatuated with the suave businessman.

Gambler and gunman Bat Masterson (Joel McCrea) rides into Dodge City, Kan., to visit his straight-arrow brother, Ed (Harry Lauter), who is hoping to defeat crooked sheriff Jim Regan (Don Haggerty) in an upcoming election. Bat purchases and renovates a rundown saloon, attracting the notice of Regan's henchmen. A shooting during the saloon's opening-night celebration causes Bat to pursue his own political vendetta against Regan and attempt to clean up the town's corruption once and for all.
