During the 1912 Mexican Revolution, rebel leader Hector Cordoba (Raf Vallone) and his bloodthirsty revolutionaries slip across the Texas border and liberate a number of cannons from a U.S. Army fort. Under direct orders from General Pershing (John Russell), Captain Rod Douglas (George Peppard) heads into Mexican territory to face down Cordoba and get back the American cannons with the help of Mexican military officer Antonio (Gabriele Tinti) and alluring local Leonora (Giovanna Ralli).

Will (Gary Grimes), Les (Ron Howard) and Tod (Charlie Martin Smith), teenage farm boys living near the Mexican border, stumble upon Harry Spikes (Lee Marvin), a local bandit near death in the middle of nowhere. After helping bring the aging man back to health, the trio decide to escape their humdrum lives by becoming outlaws themselves. Failing at their first attempt to rob a bank, the boys convince the gruff Spikes to teach them the ways of the desperado.

In 1890s California, Sicilian winemakers battle with a railroad tycoon over control of the land. Bank robber Graham Dorsey spends a few hours with beautiful widow Amanda Starbuck, in which time his gang takes part in a disastrous holdup. Learning of his comrades' demise, Dorsey goes on the lam. Believing her short-term lover was killed by the law, Amanda decides to make the most of having had a liaison with the supposedly deceased desperado by writing a book about him. Much to his confusion, the still-living Dorsey watches as his name becomes legendary.
