Hitchhiker Martel "Too Sweet" Gordone gets a lift from prostitute Linda in her van and travels with her to meet her clients. After a fight breaks out with the men, Gordone is knocked unconscious and awakens to find he has been wrongly charged with murder. As a way to protect himself in prison, Gordone starts fighting other inmates. This leads him to discover an underground boxing tournament, with the top prize being a prison release.

Boxer "Too Sweet" Gordone (Leon Isaac Kennedy) tries keeping his nose clean after being paroled from prison. He could box, but he doesn't want to go back to that life. He works as a deliveryman instead, and starts seeing his old girlfriend, Clarisse (Eugenia Wright). But a psychotic criminal, Half Dead (Ernie Hudson), who was Gordone's enemy in prison, breaks out and kills Clarisse as payback. The murder forces Gordone back into the ring, and he is desperate to get revenge against Half Dead.

English engineer Jim Keogh (Michael Caine) and black anti-apartheid activist Shack Twala (Sidney Poitier) go on the run together in the 1970s South Africa after falling foul of the police. Aided by Shack's lawyer, Rina (Prunella Gee), the two attempt to make their way to Cape Town where Shack hopes to return a diamond stash to the African National Congress and in turn seek help from the Congress' leader, Wilby (Joe De Graft). Unbeknownst to the pair, they are being followed.

Walter Whitney is a successful executive who resides in an upscale Southern California suburb. Like all of his friends and neighbors, Walter is white, and he is shocked when he learns he has a son he never knew about -- black teen Roger Porter (Denzel Washington). Despite his surprise, Walter welcomes Roger into his home; unfortunately, the less accepting Mrs. Whitney (Susan Saint James) boots both of them out of the house, and Walter's racist boss fires him, leaving him in a tough spot.
