African-American teacher Quincy Davis (Calvin Lockhart) reaches out to all his students, enticing Lerone (DeWayne Jessie) to advance his reading skills with racy paperbacks, protecting new student Douglas (Jeff Bridges) after a race-motivated beating and trying to quell a potential student strike led by the militant J.T. (James A. Watson Jr.).

The 17-year-old dreamer Billie Jean (Peggy Pettit) is the youngest in a family of loving yet discouraging women. Billie Jean's mother, Mama Rosie (Louise Stubbs), cares deeply about her three biological children. However, her own personal disappointments have left her embittered, and she only offers encouragement to her adopted daughter, Netta (Leslie Uggams). When Netta, a successful teacher, returns to visit the family, she may be the voice of guidance and hope Billie Jean desperately needs.

In 1950s Kenya, a preacher (Nathan Dambuza Mdledle) speaks out against the Mau Mau terrorists and is killed for it, leaving his young son, Mwangi (Edwin Mahinda), to fend for himself. Mwangi goes to work in the kitchen of the local British police chief, John Graham (Bob Peck), who welcomes him -- though his wife (Phyllis Logan) and son (Ronald Pirie) treat Mwangi with contempt. Things worsen when the Mau Mau intercede in his life again, this time demanding that Mwangi ally himself with them.

Anna Lucasta (Eartha Kitt) has been walking the streets in San Diego since being thrown out of home, at 19, by her alcoholic father, Joe (Rex Ingram). She's estranged from her family, but when her father and brother-in-law (Frederick O'Neal) see greedy potential in an arranged marriage to affluent Rudolph (Henry Scott), Anna is called back home. Old wounds have hardly healed, though. Just as Anna starts to feel for Rudolph, Danny (Sammy Davis Jr.), an old friend, returns to make life difficult.

As a way to protect himself in prison, Gordone starts fighting other inmates. This leads him to discover an underground boxing tournament, with the top prize being a prison release.

He works as a deliveryman instead, and starts seeing his old girlfriend, Clarisse (Eugenia Wright). But a psychotic criminal, Half Dead (Ernie Hudson), who was Gordone's enemy in prison, breaks out and kills Clarisse as payback. The murder forces Gordone back into the ring, and he is desperate to get revenge against Half Dead.

Aided by Shack's lawyer, Rina (Prunella Gee), the two attempt to make their way to Cape Town where Shack hopes to return a diamond stash to the African National Congress and in turn seek help from the Congress' leader, Wilby (Joe De Graft). Unbeknownst to the pair, they are being followed.
