Based on Rebecca Miller's recently published book of short stories, "Personal Velocity" tells three tales of women as they escape their current situations. Segmented into three parts, Greta (Parker Posey), Delia (Kyra Sedgwick) and Paula (Fairuza Balk) have one thing in common, each struggle to flee from the men who confine their personal freedom.

Longtime friends Martha (Shirley MacLaine) and Karen (Audrey Hepburn) run a boarding school for girls. When an unruly child, Mary (Karen Balkin), is punished for lying, she concocts a story that Karen and Martha are having a lesbian relationship. All the stress adversely affects Karen's engagement to Joe Cardin (James Garner).

After Richter becomes aware of Cheryl's accusations, he conspires to make it appear that she is insane.

A British prisoner of war is assigned to take care of an elephant in a zoo. Along with an American and an Austrian he escapes with the elephant and heads for the Swiss border. They use the elephant to gain access across the border. A Polish girl betrays them and aligns herself with the Nazis.

To save on expenses, advertising man Roddy Peter (Robin Phillips) takes in Jamaican lawyer Andrew (Hal Frederick) as a roommate, and the two men become friends. Andrew and his girlfriend, who is also black, are determined to break into British high society, while Roddy drifts through an unsatisfactory relationship with Ethne Burrows (Hilary Heath). As Roddy pursues a new romance with Jane (Judy Greer), constant racism drives Andrew and his girlfriend to plan a return to Jamaica.

New York City newspaper writer J.J.
