To overcome oceans and mountains which separate us from our neighbours, engineers have dug tunnels once thought impossible. We visit the sites of three vast tunnel projects. In 1871, Mont-Cenis built the first tunnel through the Alps. Work was supposed to take up to 30 years, but the new pneumatic drill broke all the records. On its opening in 1994, the Euro tunnel was the world's longest under-sea tunnel. Last, but not least, the 1965 Mont Blanc Tunnel, the longest road tunnel of its time.

Taming nature and capturing its energy - it's a task made possible by hydro-electric barrages. Several dams have revolutionised barrage building and set engineering records. Serre Poncon's barrage from 1960 is more than 120 metres high, and its reservoir is the biggest artificial lake in France. To build it, two villages in the valley below had to be flooded. Romanche-Gavet's cutting-edge barrage was completed in 2020. It replaces no fewer than five barrages and is virtually invisible.
