His abdication in 1936 had forced her fragile father, George VI, to take on the heavy burden of kingship, a responsibility which the Queen Mother blamed for his early death. At the Duke's funeral the Queen was generous to his widow, Wallis, and even persuaded the Queen Mother to join her at the graveside, as an act of reconciliation.

Writer Ig and college assistant Jo cherished their massive 108ft long garden when they moved into their house 16 years ago - but today it's a very different story. Overgrown with weeds and overflowing with detritus, the back garden now resembles a junk yard and is something of an embarrassment.

This journey begins at Brodsworth Hall, one of the most complete surviving examples of a Victorian country house. To the south is an area known as the Dukeries, where four immensely rich dukes in the 19th-century had vast estates that bordered each other. In the 1590s the very wealthy Countess of Shrewsbury built Hardwick Hall, one of the most magnificent houses of the Tudor Age. At Southwell, we look at the cathedral, which was begun in the 11th century and is an outstanding achievement of simple Romanesque design.
