Her patient has an aggressive tumour that has doubled in size in two months, and without surgery, its spread is likely to be fatal. But the tumour is in an extremely awkward position, attached to four different organs. Removing the tumour means removing part of each of them, making this is the most radical surgery that Danielle would consider performing. Meanwhile, consultant vascular surgeon Orwa Falah is taking on a case so high risk that one in ten patients don’t survive. It is the biggest operation possible in a human being: the complete replacement of the body’s largest artery, the aorta, which supplies all the critical abdominal organs.

Jack Vettriano is arguably Britain's most popular artist, with his nostalgic paintings of a lost age of glamour being instantly recognisable and his most famous work, The Singing Butler, the country's best-selling image, reproduced on everything from calendars to jigsaws. But despite his popularity, the self-taught miner's son from Fife has never been fully accepted by the art establishment. This film offers an intimate and revealing portrait of Vettriano, as he creates a painting featuring actress Kara Tointon, and sees him talk with brutal honesty about his critics and how he deals with fame.

Ben Fogle explores the ancient sea roads of the Inner Hebrides, with their evocative connections to 6th-century Christian missionaries. On Tiree, Ben explores 1,300-year-old temple ruins. Although remoteness and Viking raids have obscured its history, an undeniable air of spirituality remains. Ben visits crofter Rhoda Meek, who balances farming life with a day job in IT. Julie Clarke left her life in Glasgow to escape a difficult upbringing and moved to the Isle of Coll, transitioning to a woman in the process. The island and its people gave her confidence and support. A highlight of Ben’s journey is a visit to Iona, the island after which he named his daughter. Ben ends his pilgrimage staying overnight in a shepherd's hut.

Arriving on the Isle of Barra, Ben discovers how his own hand-knitted Gansey fisherman’s jumper is inspired by the hazardous life on these islands. We find Ben aboard a fishing boat in a wild sea, heading for the remote and deserted Mingulay – the Isle of Whispering Ghosts. He learns how the extremes of life here forced the community to abandon it. Travelling across a causeway, Ben reaches South Uist and joins Paul McCallum - the Singing Crofter, who composes Gaelic hymns, singing them as he works. He believes that faith, work and song all go together. Journeying north, Ben finds the island’s iconic 30ft Our Lady of the Isles statue, which overlooks a Nato missile base to remind the military that a greater power watches them. Prince Charles came to the Hebrides for a week in 1987 to escape media scrutiny. No-one leaked his presence to the press, and Ben drops in for morning tea with the prince’s host, 90-year-old Gloria MacKillop, to learn the art of keeping a secret. Ben then camps down for the night on Hosta Beach to reflect on this stage of his pilgrimage and what he has gained from it.

At St John’s Hospital, to the west of Edinburgh, complex surgery is also on the agenda for consultant plastic surgeons Ewa Majdak-Paredes and Neil Cahoon. Their patient is 32-year-old Kat, who after undergoing treatment for breast cancer, recently discovered she has a rare genetic mutation that means the cancer is likely to return.
