A man and a woman have a romance while on a cruise from Europe to New York. Despite being engaged to other people, both agree to reunite at the top of the Empire State Building in six months. However, an unfortunate accident keeps her from the reunion, and he fears that she has married or does not love him anymore.

English archaeologist Horatio Smith (Leslie Howard) takes his students to Germany before the start of World War II to study the existence of early Aryans. He is actually there, however, to free concentration camp inmates. General von Graum (Francis Sullivan), a Gestapo head, dispatches the beautiful Ludmilla Koslowski (Mary Morris) to find the man behind the escapes, but she instead allies with Horatio. Together they scheme to free Ludmilla's father, Sidimir (Peter Gawthorne).

French 15th-century poet François Villon (John Barrymore) loses his father at a young age, a martyr to the French cause. Villon follows in his father's footsteps, fighting ardently for his country while becoming a poet and jester. Appointed king for the day, he goes too far when he makes a joke at the expense of the Duke of Burgundy (Lawson Butt) and is exiled by King Louis XI (Conrad Veidt). He has to prove to the king that it's the duke who is the real enemy of France.

Confederate soldiers led by Vance Reno (Richard Egan) rob a Union train of its payroll money. But because the Civil War officially ended the day before, their theft was not a legitimate act of war. Now an outlaw, Vance takes his share and heads home, where he intends to marry his fiancée, Cathy (Debra Paget). Amid cameos by celebrated musicians and film stars, soldier Dakota Smith (William Terry) travels to New York City in advance of his service during World War II. At a bustling social club established for the comfort of servicemen, he meets professional eye candy Eileen Burke (Cheryl Walker), an employee prohibited from having relationships with active troops. Caught up in the merriment, Dakota and Eileen find themselves drawn to one another in a meaningful way.

Jonathan Pride (Charles Collins) is a dance teacher from Boston on his way to visit relatives in Los Angeles. His ship takes him around South America, where it's attacked by pirates. Pride is forced to work aboard their ship as a servant. He makes his escape when the ship docks on the California coast, but he realizes the local mayor (Frank Morgan) and his daughter (Steffi Duna) think he's a pirate captain. Pride's attempts to explain who he really is only lead to more confusion.
