After being discovered by prominent composer Gabriel Donozetti (Esme Percy), black laborer John Zinga (Paul Robeson) rises to international stardom as an opera singer in spite of widespread racism. Feeling uneasy, however, in a racially divided society, Zinga turns down a prestigious New York singing contract and instead journeys to his ancestral African homeland. When Zinga is met as an outsider even there, he must struggle for acceptance among the aboriginals from which he descended.

This adaptation of Clifford Odets' stage drama features Bing Crosby as the hard-drinking Frank Elgin, a once-popular Broadway star whose glory days have passed. When director Bernie Dodd (William Holden) gives Elgin a role in his new musical, he must also deal with the actor's sour and ever-present wife, Georgie (Grace Kelly), who Dodd believes is the cause of her husband's failure. However, as Dodd spends more time around Georgie, the truth about her husband becomes clear.

The stakes become higher when the lovely Eileen Forrester (June Clyde) is targeted by the killer and seeks the protection of Holmes and Watson.
