Before initiating an undercover investigation in Tombstone, Ariz., Capt. Matt Sloane (George Montgomery) sets out to build a reputation for himself as a ruthless man. Sloane distributes "wanted" circulars describing his supposed criminal exploits; drops off his young son, Terry (Scotty Morrow), with a friend; and joins a vicious gang headed up by his target: reckless outlaw Johnny Ringo (Jim Davis). As Sloane works his way into Ringo's inner circle, Terry flees home in search of his father.

Frank Bogan (Warren Kemmerling), a violent criminal sentenced to the death penalty, escapes from prison and vows revenge against those he blames for his capture. Local sheriff Chuck Morton (James Brown) is tasked with warning Bogan's likely victims. Back in England after his trip to Jamestown, Va., Capt. John Smith (Anthony Dexter) tells the tale of his journey, particularly his lost romance with Native American maiden Pocahontas (Jody Lawrence). They meet and gradually fall for each other when captured Smith is saved from certain death by the girl. But as Smith tries to maintain peace between the British colonists and local tribes, the task proves harrowing, and Smith's friend Rolfe (Robert Clarke) begins to move in on Pocahontas.

When he gets too close to discovering the truth, the crooked deputy tries to make Gantry his next victim.

As his father, Big Dan (Ward Bond), lies dying, estranged son Daniel Halliday (Joseph Cotten) returns to the family cattle ranch and recalls why he left home. Years before, Big Dan discovered that his daughter, Martha (Betsy Blair), was in love with Native American ranch hand Jivaro (Christopher Dark) and had the young man arrested on false charges. Outraged, Daniel left home and teamed with Jivaro's beautiful sister (Viveca Lindfors) and vengeful father (Jay C. Flippen) for retribution.

Foolish life insurance salesman Milford Farnsworth (Bob Hope) commits his biggest blunder yet when he unwittingly offers a six-figure policy to notorious gunslinger Jesse James (Wendell Corey). Furious, his boss orders him to repurchase the policy. James, however, parries Farnsworth's attempts with ease, robbing and humiliating him. But when James' latest scheme pairs the patsy with the bandit's sweetheart, Cora Lee Collins (Rhonda Fleming), Farnsworth and Cora begin falling in love.

As the California Gold Rush begins, Jonathan Trumbo (Ray Milland) goes AWOL from the Army and decides to lead a wagon train to the West Coast. With saloon girl Lily Bishop (Barbara Stanwyck) and Irishman Michael Fabian (Barry Fitzgerald) at his side, Jonathan arrives in California. There, he finds that rich landowner Capt. Pharaoh Coffin (George Coulouris) is trying to block California from statehood. But Trumbo's never taken kindly to men in power, and he's soon dangerously at odds with Coffin.
