Chip (John Dehner), a ranch foreman, approaches aimless hard-drinker Matt Brown (Audie Murphy) in a New Mexico bar. The owner of Chip's ranch has died and left Matt his land, thinking the troubled drifter may be his long-estranged son. Initially, Matt plans on selling the ranch, but then decides to keep it, hoping to impress his ex-lover, Janet (Terry Moore). The ranch, however, turns out to be in foreclosure, forcing Matt and Chip to come up with a plan to pay off their debt to the bank.

After growing up living a life of crime, outlaw Sam Weller (John Lupton) decides to go straight, but neither Sam's father, Trench (Aaron Saxon), nor his thieving cohort, Charlie Whitman (Norman Frederic), take the news well. After Sam invests in a way station with his friend, Luke Ram (Mark Stevens), Trench and Whitman convince a band of Sioux warriors to attack the station. Although Simon eventually forges a peace agreement with the Sioux, a final battle with Trench looms on the horizon.

Gunslinger Mike Ryan (Joel McCrea) is intent on bringing the dangerous outlaw Velvet Clark (Mark Stevens) to justice. Thanks to his prowess with a gun, Dave Robles (Anthony Quinn) makes a place for himself in Mesa, becoming sheriff after out-dueling several gunfighters in a single day. But Robles, a Mexican, seethes over the town's racism, and is warned by kindly nurse Estella (Katy Jurado) that without his gun, he would not last very long. That theory is put to the test when the new sheriff injures his wrist fighting with Ed Bannister (Peter Whitney), who upon learning about it, challenges Robles to a duel.
