But after meeting and falling in love with American tourists Lillian (Joanne Woodward) and Connie (Diahann Carroll), the pair must decide whether their artistic integrity is worth abandoning.

In this sequel to "In The Heat of the Night," Detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) must solve the murder of a prostitute. The last person witnessed with the victim is Tibbs' friend, Logan Sharpe (Martin Landau), a preacher and activist. Despite his loyalty, Tibbs must investigate when Sharpe admits having visited the prostitute. In addition to his police work, Tibbs must also ease tension with his wife (Barbara McNair), who wants him to spend more time with her and their children.

When an executive and a night watchman are killed in a San Francisco office building, Lt. Virgil Tibbs is called in to investigate and discovers the watchman was actually killed elsewhere. Soon Tibbs is contacted by urban revolutionaries who confess to kidnapping -- but not killing -- the watchman in a botched attempt to expose a heroin ring operating out of the building. Tibbs believes them, but when his superiors learn of his ties to the group, he's suspended from the force.

Hotheaded laborer B.J. Hammer (Fred Williamson) can't go long without ending up in a fight, and, after he comes out on top in a particularly impressive workplace scuffle, word of his brawling skills makes its way to Davis (Bernie Hamilton), a top boxing manager. Hammer is hired by Davis and begins a lucrative career in the ring, only to find out that his new employer wants him to throw a fight and take part in other illicit activities. Hammer reacts to this news violently, and the feud is on.
