Penny's love for her partner, cabdriver Phil, has run dry. He is a philosophical guy, and she works on the checkout at a supermarket. Their daughter Rachel cleans in a home for elderly people, and their son Rory is unemployed and aggressive. The joy has gone out of Phil's and Penny's life, but when an unexpected tragedy occurs, they are brought together to rediscover their love.

While trying to seduce a married woman (Paula Prentiss), egotistical concert pianist Henry Orient (Peter Sellers) is interrupted by two precocious schoolgirls, Valerie (Tippy Walker) and Marian (Merrie Spaeth). At first he thinks nothing of it, but as he sees them more often, he becomes convinced they're spies for his lover's husband. The girls, meanwhile, have found out who he is, and Valerie insists she's in love. She starts a scrapbook, which her mother finds and, of course, misconstrues.

Youth is in full swing at Oceancrest College, and no place swings harder than the Silver Palms, the choice hot spot for student Sandy (Pamela Tiffin) and her pals. Sandy's uncle, Woody (Woody Woodbury), who performs a comedy act at the club, has his livelihood threatened when wealthy conservative Edgar Cronin (Robert Middleton) attempts to shutter the wild hangout for good. This makes things especially sticky for Cronin's grandson, Ding (James Darren), who's trying to get a date with Sandy.
