Steve Sinclair (Robert Taylor) is a former gunfighter and soldier who left his violent ways behind him after the Civil War. Since then, he has settled down as a rancher in a small Western town. But his easygoing life is turned upside down when his unstable little brother, Tony (John Cassavetes), shows up with his bride-to-be, Joan (Julie London). While Steve has given up his gun-toting ways, Tony has not, and his violent tendencies lead to trouble for the entire town.

Matthew Quigley (Tom Selleck) is an American rifleman who travels to the Australian outback to answer a help wanted ad calling for a sharpshooter. When Quigley meets his employer, Elliot Marston (Alan Rickman), he's appalled to discover the job involves killing Aborigines. The two men fight, and when Quigley is knocked out, Marston leaves him and a local crazy woman (Laura San Giacomo) to die in a remote part of the outback. They're rescued, however, by Aborigines, and plot their revenge.

Tired of his job at a ranch owned by Walter Buckman (Karl Malden), Frank Post (Ryan O'Neal) wants to pull a heist, and when his much older coworker, Ross Bodine (William Holden), sees nothing better on the horizon, the cowboys agree to team up for the crime. After filling their pockets with loot from a local bank, Frank and Ross ride toward what they hope is freedom. But the younger Buckmans, Paul (Joe Don Baker) and John (Tom Skerritt), pursue them over the rough land of the Southwest.

In search of greener pastures, Senator William J. Tadlock (Kirk Douglas) heads west, with scores of settlers following behind. Tadlock has hired an experienced scout, Dick Summers (Robert Mitchum), to accompany the caravan on the way from Missouri to Oregon. But hazards along the trail, and Tadlock's increasing megalomania, threaten to break up the expedition. Their problems get bigger when one of the pilgrims accidentally kills the son of a Sioux chief.

After the Civil War, King Cameron (Howard Keel) moves to Texas, purchases a cattle ranch and settles down with his wife, Cordelia (Ava Gardner). They find themselves at the mercy of Jose Esqueda (Anthony Quinn), a local bandit who has terrorized the town with his adoptive brother, Rio (Robert Taylor). Rio is kidnapped when he tries to mount an attack on the ranch and agrees to work for Cameron so he can be close to Cordelia. Though he's incensed at Rio's betrayal, Jose vows to get him back.

Near the end of the Civil War, Julia Hayne (Miriam Hopkins) travels to Libby Prison to convince Cmdr. Vance Irby (Randolph Scott) to help transport gold from Virginia City to the South. Union intelligence agent Kerry Bedford (Errol Flynn) breaks out of the prison and, learning of the plot for the gold, travels to Nevada, meeting Julia on the way. Sensing Julia is attracted to Kerry, Vance asks her to help set a trap while desperados led by Murrell (Humphrey Bogart) also close in on the gold.
