Mark Bonnar narrates a new series revealing the hidden world of Galloway Forest, the country's largest afforested area. Join the amazing men and women who live and work in the place known as Scotland's 'Highlands in the Lowlands', where 600,000 tonnes of timber is produced every year. James Jones sawmill in Lockerbie to the east of the forest powers through 20,000 logs a day. But when a six-tonne machine called a crosscut stacker breaks down, a dedicated engineering team must save the day. A decline in salmon numbers in the River Cree near Newton Stewart has led to a tireless effort to restock the river by the Cree Hatchery and Habitat Trust. Archie McNeillie and John 'Cool' Coughtrie from the Forestry Commission's Recreation Department deal with a rat infestation in a public area caused by an overzealous bird feeder. And at Balloch O'Dee campsite, owner James gets ready to stage a comedy night, with hilarious consequences.

Documentary showcasing the game of shinty and the Highland communities that play it. Shinty’s ancient origins date as far back as the 5th century, when it was believed to be the traditional battle game of the Highlands clans. By the 18th century, it had become Scotland’s most popular game and can lay claim to giving birth to golf, ice hockey, and even the development of football, which borrowed set positions such as defender, midfielder and forward from the game. Today, however, shinty is underfunded and largely ignored outside the Highlands, but it remains strong in the small communities where it began centuries ago. Shinty's biggest prize is the Camanachd Cup, a trophy that every shinty player and community dreams of bringing home. Being such a physical game, and with the threat of injuries constantly looming, it's no surprise that the game fell out of fashion. Giving It Stick follows the rival teams of Newtonmore and Kingussie through the highs and lows of the 2022 season, and celebrates the people keeping shinty alive in the Highlands.

Paul follows the River Ayr as it flows from Loch Glenbuck towards the sea and the Clyde coast. The old mining village of Glenbuck was demolished long ago, but its memory is kept alive by former resident Barbara Alexander whose uncle, the famous Liverpool football manager Bill Shankly, was a Glenbuck man. From Glenbuck, Paul follows the river through a landscape pockmarked by the scars of old mineral extraction and industry. At Muirkirk he discovers how a local man illuminated the cities of the world with gas lighting, and how a certain Mr McAdam invented tarmac for the roads of the world. The course of the river Ayr flows through land rich in covenanting history when religious conflict cost many lives. In the Ayr gorge, Paul encounters the extraordinary tale of the radical preacher Alexander Peden, whose life on the run forced him to hide in caves while still preaching hellfire sermons to the people. Finally reaching the coast, Paul visits the only working salt evaporation tower in the world. Here, with a pinch of salt, he learns how sea water is evaporated by wind and sun to make brine, from which sea salt is made.

Winter is looming in Scotland. And while many are battening down the hatches and keeping warm, farmers are still outside caring for their livestock and making preparations for the year ahead. In North Uist, Fraser and Carianne set off for the mainland to sell their own tups and buy new ones ready for mating season. They don’t always agree on which is best, and the best don’t always prove their worth. In South Ayrshire, the Barclay family have always been keen competitors at agricultural shows. They are readying their best sheep for the Lanark Winter Show, with a lesson from dad John in how to prim and preen the perfect ewe before the boys take them into the ring, hoping for a rosette. At Thorabella Farm in Moray, intrepid entrepreneurs Nikki and Ollie begin their latest venture – farming rabbits to sell to a local hotel restaurant. They are new to keeping rabbits, and finding out the sex of the breeding stock proves a challenge.

It’s July, and with a new month comes a new set of jobs to get stuck into at Beechgrove Garden, with harvesting on the agenda this week. On the shortest day of the year last year, Calum planted his shallots in pots and kept them in the greenhouse for the rest of the winter. They were planted out in spring and now, six months later, they are ready to be harvested and enjoyed. April last year saw Calum planting the first early batch of potatoes, and now it’s time to get them dug up and tasted. After an excessively dry spell, followed by an extremely spell, the lawns at Beechgrove need a bit of attention, so a bit of lawn care is needed. And Brian looks at how areas of grass that are left to grow can encourage wildflowers and wildlife.

Comedian and farmer Jim Smith presents as teams of woodworkers travel the length and breadth of Scotland, visiting a different woodland each episode as they bid to impress the local judge. Visiting some of Scotland’s most magnificent woodlands, the teams cut, craft, create and camp in the great outdoors as they battle against the clock, their opponents and mother nature to lay claim to the Golden Axe. In this episode, team captains Linzi and Vicente each hope to lead their team to victory among the trees at Glenlude in the Scottish Borders. The teams are challenged to turn their felled spruce into something that will assist the many groups that are helping to rewild these woodlands. However, as the experts struggle with their timber and the sun beats down, can the teams stand the blistering heat as they look to shave, cut and fashion their timber into something spectacular and win over today’s judge? Which team will emerge from the sawdust, to claim victory and lift the golden axe for the first time.
