Aspiring actor and hot-dog stand employee Bobby Taylor (Robert Townsend) catches the ire of his grandmother (Helen Martin) for auditioning for a role in the regrettably titled exploitation film Jivetime Jimmy's Revenge. When Tinseltown Studios casts Taylor in the title role, he has a series of conflicted dreams satirizing African-American stereotypes in Hollywood, and must reconcile his career goals with his desire to remain a positive role model for his little brother (Craigus R Johnson).

Slick Chicago street hustler Big Daddy Foxx (Yaphet Kotto) lives comfortably off petty confidence scams that he pulls with the help of loyal teenage acolytes Baby 'D (Kirk Calloway), Tiny (Donn Harper) and Player (Thomas Carter). His business is jeopardized, however, when he runs afoul of neighborhood racketeer Goldie (Rudy Ray Moore). Their rivalry escalates until the threat of a freeway being built through their neighborhood obliges them to cooperate in order to fight city hall.

Dr. Richard Sturgess (Ray Liotta) leads a team of compassionate doctors at a veteran's hospital. Along with Drs. Morgan (Kiefer Sutherland), Handleman (Forest Whitaker) and Van Dorn (Lea Thompson), he fights to deliver adequate care to needy veterans in the face of funding cuts and a corrupt administration. To succeed, the staff may have to bend the rules and circumvent the villainous "Article 99," a bureaucratic loophole that prevents veterans from receiving the benefits they deserve.

Walter Whitney is a successful executive who resides in an upscale Southern California suburb. Like all of his friends and neighbors, Walter is white, and he is shocked when he learns he has a son he never knew about -- black teen Roger Porter (Denzel Washington).
